Hell-bent on destroying farmers’ marketing agency
In a grain system dominated by global giants, the Canadian Wheat Board works on behalf of our family farmers. The vast majority of farmers support a strong CWB. But Stephen Harper’s Conservatives want to squash it. Here’s a selection of their dirty tricks and illegal moves.
- They fired the CWB’s CEO (hired by farmers and respected);
- They fired Directors and appointed anti-CWB replacements;
- Midway through Directors’ elections, they cut 1/3 of farmers from the list of people to receive ballots;
- They put a gag order on the CWB; the courts ruled the order illegal;
- They tried to strip barley from the CWB by Cabinet Order; the courts ruled the government broke the law;
- Now, they’ve taken the caps off third-party spending during CWB Elections; Cargill can spend millions but candidates can only spend $15,000.
Stephen Harper hates the CWB. He’s fixated on destroying it. And he’s going to “walk over” farmers and the CWB if they get in his way.
